Daisy flowers are some of the top choices when it comes to a simple, pretty bouquet. Gerbera daisies are the ones most frequently ordered, as they come in a range of lovely colors.
Unfortunately, daisies are also short-lived, so they need a bit of extra TLC if you want them to last longer.
When your daisy flowers first arrive, they should be fresh looking with all the petals standing out. If they look slightly droopy, a fresh vase of water should perk them up quickly. However, there are a few other things you can do to ensure that those flowers look great for longer.
Upon receiving your daisies, take any protective coverings off. Often, daisies will come with a cup over them to protect the delicate flower.
Fill a vase with fresh, warm water before you start to work with the flowers, since you will want to transfer them immediately to the vase. Add a flower preservative to this and stir it well.
Fill the sink with water and place the stems in it.
Now you will need some very sharp gardening shears or a knife to cut the stems, still underwater. Take off about an inch and cut on a slight angle and transfer the flower immediately to the vase of water. Repeat this for all your flowers. This helps open up the stems so that they can pull in lots of water and keep the blooms looking fresh. After 3 or so hours in the preservative solution, you can move the daisies to a new vase of fresh water with flower food added. This technique will help them stay lively for several days longer than usual.
To prevent bacterial blockage from dirty water (which causes the top of the flower to bend over and droop) it is a good idea to change the water every couple of days and add fresh preservatives. If you notice the water is getting cloudy, change it.
Daisies should also be kept out of direct sunlight, so keep them away from those sunny windows. They will also fade faster if there is a cool draft or in a location which heats up too much. Instead, look for cool, draft free areas to display your flowers.
Daisy flowers do best when cared for properly. Take the time to prepare them as soon as the flowers arrive and you will be able to enjoy them for a long time.
